i saw this in a theater today. it was good stuff.

Before the lights went down at Madison Square Garden, 50 fans were given hand-held Hi-8 cameras and told to record their experience of being at a Beastie Boys concert in the band's hometown. The man behind many of their innovative music videos, director Nathaniel Hornblower (aka MCA, aka Adam Yauch), then edited the best footage from the night with his signature creative imprint into a musical experience that takes you right into the world of Mike D, Ad Rock and MCA. Also features Money Mark, Doug E. Fresh and Mix Master Mike.

and it's so neat to see a movie title that is so politically incorrect, using both profanity and a semicolon.

Following on from our news last Friday about the ABC News debacle surrounding the supposed dangers of DS Pictochat to children, its come to our attention that ABC News were informed beforehand of the facts, but chose to ignore them and publish a misleading report clearly aimed at frightening parents and causing a moral panic.

GamerDad, which is SPOnG’s new favourite site for all things to do with gaming and parenting, reported that one of their writers, David Long, was interviewed in depth for the piece by Nydia Han of Channel 6 Action News in Philadelphia (an ABC Affiliate) and that Mr Long made it clear to her that Pictochat was neither an Internet-enabled service, nor a threat to children from potential paedophiles anonymously attempting to meet or ‘groom’ children over the service.

It seems Ms Han then decided to totally ignore all of the facts as presented to her by GamerDad's Long and run with the erroneous and misleading story about an 11-year old girl being stalked over Pictochat in a WiFi hotspot.

Now, whilst this is merely an ABC News affiliate mis-reporting a story about gaming - which regional press all over the world do with alarming regularity - it's still worth pointing out that the story was picked up by hundreds of gaming news sites and forums (SPOnG included) and even on Slashdot.

As GamerDad’s David Long makes clear: “What's not in the story is anything explained by the GamerDad this reporter consulted before going to air. On Monday morning, I received a call from of Channel 6 Action News, asking me about this exact story, the workings of the Nintendo DS, Pictochat and Wi-Fi. I was at first sort of dumbfounded by the idea of a child being contacted by someone through Pictochat because it's not Internet enabled in any way. In order to talk to someone through this application, you must be within 30 to 100 feet of the person (or persons... it supports 16 person chat rooms) you're talking to…. meaning you could probably see whoever it is you're talking to if you just got up and walked around looking for someone holding a Nintendo DS.”

Mr Long goes on to stress that he talked to the reporter for a good 15 minutes about how rogue Pictochatters in public are not a threat to children and how, “...even after I received a call-back asking if it were possible for this to happen at one of Philadelphia's 'Wi-Fi hotspots' which are also mentioned in the article….I stated specifically that Pictochat would still not work because it doesn't ever make any connection with a network as it has no means of connecting to an Internet Service Provider”

Mr Long also talked to the reporter about DS Friend Codes and how they work, specifically that you have to know your friends codes to play games online with them. However, unfortunately Ms Han either didn’t understand any of the information which GamerDad gave to her regarding DS and online play/Pictochat or - and this seems far more likely - she chose to ignore it as it didn’t fit in well with the overall tone of the piece she wanted to write. Which was an irresponsible moral panic attack piece, blaming the Nintendo DS for being directly responsible for the child in question being stalked.

As Long says: “Unfortunately, the story is written in such a way that nothing I said is made clear at all. The story essentially makes it sound like your kids can be contacted on the DS by anyone at any time and that you should beware of predators with Nintendo DS lurking on every corner and on the Internet.”

You can see Long's full report on the shameful matter at GamerDad

In brighter news, GamerDad also draws our attention to the fact that gamers make good fathers. It seems that dads who play videogames with their kids not only get to spend more quality time interacting with their children (i.e., instead of passively watching TV, DVD’s and so on) but that they also know a lot more about which games are best/worst for their children (yes, they actually look at the age-ratings on games and know what they mean) and they encourage their children to use technology and the Internet in a useful, responsible way. Oh, and dad gamers are generally smart, good at maths and like LEGO too.

SPOnG has been trying to explain all of this to our better halves for years.

Using waste vegetable oil is an excellent way to go. I've a friend that does it (makes his own biodiesel from scratch) for ~ $0.52 a gallon. But all that takes time so even though you’ll save money at the pump you have to ask how much is your time worth. I’m not knocking saving the environment or loosening our reliance on foreign oil, I’m all for it but many of you are right on; ‘easy’ is relative. Making your biodiesel efficiently is the trick. BTW, that same friend powers his entire house by an ultra low rpm diesel engine (running the biodiesel he makes) and he’s never paid a single cent to the power company! He’s any engine/eco freak. =)
helicopterhead posted by helicopterhead (0) at 11:19 AM 2/09/06

http://digg.com/science/Learn_how_to_convert_a_diesel_car_to_run_on_vegetable_oil.

neat.

you can't have good day without having bad days

here's what is stressing me out, this is livejournal anyways.

-my car.
i have no brakes whatsoever, i have something leaking out a hose by my radiator, my engine is misfiring due to some oil leaking in a cylinder probably, i have no spare tire, gas is expensive, i'm broke.
-my eyes.
i need new contacs, these disposables have been in way too long, and i can't get new ones without having to take an annual eye exam, for whcih then doc will ask why i have had my contacs in for so long and will tell me it's bad practice and my eyes will kill me from the inside out.
-i'm malnourished.
i have no food in my house, i have gatorade, bottled water, pickle juice. thanks to people like alex, neal, kate, and shaun feeding me.
-healthcare.
i need a dental check up, haven't had one in years, and i can feel new cavities, damn.
-my phone.
the microphone in my phone died, meaning that people can call me and try to talk to me, and they won't hear a word i'm saying. i owe my cell company some funds, alson.

all these problems will be solved when i get sufficient funds in the next week and a half, but it sucks waiting for that, especially the lack of proper meals.
i'm supposed to be giving blood at my job sometime this week, dunno why i said "yes", i've never done it before, and i'm worried considering my eating habits.

this would be really nicely solved if i had my fema money.
but my fema money is in the mailbox of my apartment i leased in austin, texas (what?!?!) that i got the first three months' rent free, thanks to fema and red cross.
so i have to spend about $150 in gas to go back on an austin round trip, and spend probably half my fema check (if i'm lucky) on clearing the lease. i never moved in to austin because upon getting an apartment, and realizing it wasn't furnished and i was too lazy to try for looking for work in austin, i decided to go back to the coast. that decision was made within 24 hours of my spontaneous choice to go to austin, on sept 20th.

once again, that $150 invovles getting a check from my job, which i'm waiting on, plus i owe people like alex and shaun that have been loaning me gas money, so i'm still trying to figure out how to stretch my funds right.

ooh, life.

ka-ka katrina and too much detail scattered about

yo, so i'm chillin' at the slowest pc ever in some remote room in the University Of Southern Alabama, thanks to mr. sanow. i like how i capitalized the school name and nothing else. anyways, so i left my gulfport apartment sunday morning after i made a spur of the moment call to dutch (a/k/a "Vantastic Landrum"), followed by our joint decision to go to mobile to avoid the horrors of a category five storm known simply as katrina. taking the backroads as opposed to the interstate is one of the many reasons i consider dutch to be a higher caliber scholar than me, that fool knows how to duke it, i must say. we met up with the 504 boys (zach, ian, patrick) and nik. later on, charlie and his girlfriend stephanie comes by from gulfport to wait out the storm with us. we started off partaking in what the usual important storm preperation was necessary. sunday was decent, monday morning after a few false alarms, finally the power goes out. it gets really windy. pat's car looks like someone tossed a salad (pause) on it. and limbs fly everywhere, trees fall down, everybody in the house is getting really hot because of no a/c. i'm the only one satisfied with the temperature. later on once things died down, windows got opened. once that happened, i started getting a cold. my ideal temperature is a few notches warmer than everybody elses. consider this morning pat was heavily sweating and upset about it, and i was feeling very happy and comfortable and not worried about sweating, but mainly because sweat wasn't dripping off me, either. i'm sure i stank, though. anyways, so monday, later on, was filled with people venturing out seeing what had happened, food being cooked as to get rid of it before it spoiled (much cooking has taken place all this time, and i must say, all the food has been magnificent and i appreciate all of it, stephanie is an awesome cook.) i also found a few cold and cough pills on top of the microwave and engulfed about half a dozen and i've been great the last 24 hours. everyone else still complains about the heat, but i'm awesome, as i just pointed out. most the people in the house occupy their time with their Nintendo DS's. Me, dutch, and nik don't because we don't have one, or really care about them right now. the USA college has power and a laundromat that's great for free laundry and powering up cell phones and DS's. we doubt power will come to this part of mobile soon, the college campus has full power, though. driving around yesterday we went looking for gas, no luck. same goes for ice, pretty much.

it's funny how the days have been long, sometimes much has happened within them, many times i have been bored, it's kinda weird how track of time has been. i have been getting in touch with carmen and jason emerson from time to time via text messaging. i tried texting my mom's cellphone to see if my family was okay, but nothing yet. it seems i can't call coastal numbers, and nobody can call me, but text messaging is working just fine incoming and outgoing.

i'm very much an outcast here. i'm getting very bored quickly. i don't have a video game console to spare my time on, i don't have intersting conversation to get involved in, don't have a girlfriend in tow i could spend my time with feeling important and wanted with, plus i just go wherever everyone else is going and if i'm bored while venturing with others, i just rest. i rest alot. so i barely can sleep when everyone else does. oh i'm lonely. and i want to know how a couple of people on the coast are, but can't find out right now. that bums me.

i watched the videos on the wlox.com website, the ghetto bird visuals. it seems like the entire coast (minus a few stable structures) has been demolished. my work is still there, but that's not that important considering teh damage around it makes me realize the next year for the coast will be a year of rebuilding a civilization. sorta makes me wanna move elsewhere. i wanna go back home, but don't want to partake in it. i just wanna see, then leave. i wanna know if the money i left in my apartment is still there. i shoulda brought it with me.

i wanna know if my apartment is okay. probably not. probably flooded. there's an inch gap in my front door which always floods the first few inches of carpet from the door during storms already. i stored everything in the closet in my bedroom, but i left the closet open, and a window not ten feet from it ajar. good move. but i don't have much (pc, monitor, surround sound, portable turntable, that's pretty much it) and all i really cared about (few clothes, external hard drive of mp3s) i brought with me. i'm worried about my car i left when i met with dutch, but not much important is in that.

i dunno when dutch and i are going back, pretty much my entire future is uncertain. my entire life has taken a unique turn. funny thing is, i kinda like it already.
anyways, everyone i'm with right now is safe. i'd like to know if my family is safe, but i don't know. i'd like to know if soem of my friends are safe, but i don't know. i'm not panicing over it, whatever happens, happens.

what rock?

funny how i see this as i was thinking yesterday as how i hate the name "hard rock". i've never actually heard this so called "hard rock" music in my life. is it death metal? grindocre? hardcore? i think not, but when i think of "the opposite of soft rock", that's what comes to mind. in fact, every time i been into a hard rock cafe (like once or twice, sorry, i'm not a fan) all i've ever heard was pop music. i can see why they don't want nuclear weapons inside. they're encouraging it.
